What is SEO ?

We would like to explain you some of the most common terms used in SEO :

  • SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation ; it means optimising your website for the search engines.
  • Keyphrases are the sentences that people use to search in the search engines.
  • Search Engines are websites that allow internet users to find websites related to what they are searching for. Examples of major search engines : Google, Yahoo and Live Search
  • Ranking or Position the position of a website for a keyphrase when you search for it in Google.
  • SERP or Search Engine Results Page : the listing of websites you see when you search for a keyphrase.
  • Organic or Natural Listing : is the listing of websites on the left-hand side of the screen. The listings on the right-hand of the screen are paid listings (via PPC).

We know for sure that many people consult search engines to find what they are looking for. Nobody would be able to find what they need if we didn't have search engines. There are 3 major search engines : Google, Yahoo and Live Search. The most important search engine today is Google, which is consulted by 75% of all search engine-users.

There is more : the way people search, or the search-behaviour of internet users is very important. We know that people mainly visit websites that are listed on the first 3 pages of Google for their keyphrase (that would be the first 30 results or top30).

Summary : Once we know what keyphrases people use when they search for our products and ⁄ or services, we should try to have a good position when people search for those keyphrases : Our website should be listed within the first 3 pages, or first 30 results or top30 of Google and other search engines.
